Literacy FAQ
Through the Literacy Services program at South Piedmont, you will learn to read or improve your reading skills, improve your writing skills and vocabulary, and improve your overall communication skills.
The program matches students with local tutors, many of whom are retired educators. The tutors and students decide on a tutoring schedule, and then they work together to reach the student’s individual literacy goals. Typically, tutors and students meet once or twice a week for at least six months.

Skills for Reading. And Life.
South Piedmont’s Literacy Services Program is designed to provide learners with the foundational skills they need to read, write, and communicate more effectively. Through a structured curriculum, students receive personalized support that focuses on improving their reading abilities and expanding their vocabulary. This not only enhances comprehension but also empowers students to express themselves with more clarity and confidence.
Beyond reading and writing, the program also offers the opportunity to acquire essential computer skills that are crucial in today’s world. These digital skills complement the literacy training, creating a well-rounded foundation for personal and professional success. As students emerge from the program, they not only become more proficient in reading and writing but also gain the confidence to participate fully in their communities and handle the demands of daily life with greater ease.

Learning to Read Unlocks Community
Literacy Services is a program that, above all else, fosters a sense of community. If you think about how isolating it is for someone to not know how to read – that’s incredibly isolating. When you bring someone into the world of reading, you’re also bringing them into the community.
