Motorcycle Riding FAQ
The motorcycle and 3-wheeler courses consist of an approximately five-hour e-course that students do on their own, followed by approximately two days of practical training at the South Piedmont motorcycle range.
Lots of reasons! We’ll provide the motorcycles, so you can learn to ride even if you don’t already own a vehicle yourself. Our class sizes are small, and our instructors are avid and experienced motorcyclists.
You must have the ability to ride a two-wheeled, non-stationary bicycle. You also need to be able to support an approximately 300-pound motorcycle while straddling it and push the motorcycle for short distances.
Students must be at least 16 to take the Motorcycle & 3-Wheeler Basic Rider course at South Piedmont, and a driver’s license or permit is required. This is a safety course that provides a DMV waiver card; the course does not provide or guarantee a license. Adding a motorcycle license endorsement to a North Carolina Driver’s License is regulated by the DMV; check the DMV website or handbook for current guidelines.
No
First, you must have permission from your parent or guardian. Your parent or guardian will need to come to the first class and sign a permission form in front of an instructor (your parent/guardian can leave after they sign the permission form), or your parent or guardian can submit a notarized copy prior to the start of class. State law requires that anyone under 18 who applies to obtain a motorcycle learner’s permit or a driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement must pass a course taught by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or the N.C. Motorcycle Safety Education Program.
Not if you live in North Carolina! Successful graduates of this course will receive a waiver card for the on-bike skills portion (road test) of the NC DMV motorcycle license test. If you live in South Carolina, you will not receive a waiver card. SC DMV does not accept our waiver. This course meets the guidelines of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the N.C. Motorcycle Safety Education Program.
Motorcycle Rider course students are required to take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation e-course on their own and bring their certificate of completion or a photo of the certificate to class. Be sure to do the online course at least one week before your riding course begins. You must do the online portion of the course before you can do the riding portion. If you will need access to a computer, please contact us, and we’ll be glad to help. If you have NOT received the email with instructions and the MSF e-course link by the Wednesday before your course, please email us at csullivan@spcc.edu.
Students need to bring a pen and dress appropriately for riding. You should wear:
- Long pants that are made of denim or another heavy-duty material (no leggings, sweatpants); no holes in pants
- Long sleeves
- Sturdy over-the-ankle footwear
- Students must bring their own helmet and gloves. The helmet must be DOT-compliant (FMVSS No. 218) and in good condition.
- Full-fingered gloves (leather preferred)
- Protective eyewear (sunglasses are OK)
The course is taught at the Old Charlotte Highway campus in Monroe.
