How do I check out library books?
All you need is your library card to check out books. Your South Piedmont ID badge is also your library card. If you need an ID card printed, please visit a Navigator in Student Services.
How long can I keep books and other materials?
Books are loaned for two weeks. Books can be renewed unless someone has requested them.
Here is a summary of our borrowing procedures for all materials:
- Books – 14 days; overdue fine = 10 cents per day
- Headphones – available for use daily and semesterly
- Magazines and newspapers – not circulated
- Reserved items – may be used in the library only
- Calculators – available for the day or semesterly
The person whose library account is used to check out materials is responsible for those items as well as any overdue fines. The responsible party should not mark in, deface, destroy or alter any library material. Anyone doing so will be required to pay for the replacement of the item, plus a processing fee. Persons with fines or overdue materials are required to settle their account with the library before registering, graduating, receiving end-of-semester grades or requesting transcripts.
Books are loaned for two weeks. They can’t be renewed if someone has requested them.
Is there a quiet place in the library to study?
Yes, there are quiet places to study. The Library Learning Commons in the Main Building on the Old Charlotte Highway campus includes the Quiet Study Room on the second floor. The Academic Support Center, located near the Library Learning Commons, has three group study rooms, and the Technology Commons has four study booths.
The Horne Library at the L.L. Polk campus has three study rooms. These can be reserved by faculty and students. You can reserve these rooms in person, by email or over the phone. Because of the limited number of rooms, it is best to make an appointment.
Do you have laptops that can be checked out for use off campus?
We sure do. Both libraries have laptops available to take home. We have some laptops that can be borrowed for the entire semester, and some that are available on-campus only for the day. The laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Can I print in color at the library?
Absolutely. Our printer can make color as well as black and white copies.
Can I scan a picture or document?
Yes! There is a scanner available at each campus library. Stop by the front desk for assistance in using it.
Is there Wi-Fi in the library?
The libraries have Wi-Fi access and comfortable seating for you to sit with your laptop. The wireless network you want to use is called SPCC_Guest. If you have any trouble accessing this network, ask someone at the front desk for help.
If you need a quiet place to study, there are rooms available. These rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but can also be reserved by calling, emailing, or visiting the library. All rooms can comfortably fit four people. The Academic Support Center on the OCH campus (next door to the Library Learning Commons) has three study rooms, each with a monitor mounted on the wall to allow you to project your laptop image onto it. The Horne Library on the LLP campus has three study rooms. One of these rooms has a monitor mounted. All rooms have a whiteboard available.
The mission of the South Piedmont Community College Libraries is to support the educational needs of students, staff, and the surrounding communities by providing the most current information resources, the most user-friendly instruction, and the latest technologies in order to foster learning, student success, and workforce and community development.
The purpose of the Library Guidelines is to help facilitate a safe, pleasant, and comfortable environment for library patrons and staff, and to preserve library property and facilities. These guidelines apply to all South Piedmont Community College libraries and to all people on library premises.
Library staff members have the responsibility, authority, and discretion to deal promptly with any unacceptable behavior, including disruptive behavior not explicitly defined in this policy. Patrons engaging in disruptive actions, after being warned by library staff, may be asked to leave the library. Depending on the seriousness or nature of the offense, the offender may lose library privileges; the length of the ban shall be determined by the South Piedmont Libraries administration. South Piedmont Campus Safety and/or police assistance may be summoned if staff feel that such action is required.
Guidelines:
Be mindful of making so much noise that others are disturbed. This can include talking, laughing, ringing telephones, and/or audible music/videos.
Please do not run, jump, or climb in the library or on library furniture.
Damaging property will result in a fine and academic discipline.
Threats of violence toward other students, faculty, or staff, or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.
Eating and drinking is allowed, but library staff request that drinks have lids, and food is limited to a small snack. Please throw away all trash.
Study rooms need to be kept clean, and nothing provocative, explicit, or violent may be written on the whiteboards.
Community users younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Library Computer Use Procedures
- South Piedmont Library Services offers daily and semester computer checkouts at both Library locations.
- All equipment is loaned on a first come, first served basis, and supplies are limited.
- Semester laptops must be returned to the library at the end of each semester by the due date provided at checkout. Failure to return equipment on time will result in a fine.
- Kiosk laptops may be checked out by students for four hours on campus only. Keeping them for longer results in a hold on a student’s library account.
Users May Not:
- Violate copyright/trademark laws or software license restrictions.
- View obscene materials, gamble, or participate in any activity not permitted by law.
- Use the computer to harass or libel others.
- Use the computer for commercial purposes.
- Participate in activities that will change or damage the hardware or software, disrupt communications, or overload networks.
Violators will lose library privileges, and serious offenses may lead to disciplinary action by the College.
