The School’s general education program provides a core set of experiences to all SPCC students, regardless of their program. Through general education, students become better communicators, more sophisticated problem-solvers, more interculturally aware and adept, and more analytical and interpretive. The general education program encourages students to develop skills necessary effective personal, academic, professional, and civic lives.

Through the Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) programs, the School offers two-year degrees for students who wish to transfer to a four-year North Carolina College or University.   The Comprehensive Articulation Agreement between the University of North Carolina System and the North Carolina Community College System allows for seamless transitions from SPCC to the University system. The North Carolina Independent Articulation Agreement sets up a similar process for private colleges and universities to accept SPCC credit. Students who graduate from SPCC with the AA or AS degree transfer to their university destination with junior status.

The Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) degree is designed for students who wish to explore study in the visual art. The AFA degree provides students with foundations of visual art and the opportunity to concentrate in studio painting, ceramics, sculpture, or digital media. While the AFA degree is not a transfer degree, the majority of courses in the AFA are transfer courses. Therefore, students who are interested in pursuing a four-year degree are able to transfer the majority of their courses.   Currently, efforts are underway to provide for seamless transfer for AFA students to select North Carolina Universities.

The Learning Communities in First Year Experience bring students, faculty, and staff together for study and discussion outside the classroom for academic and social support. Global Scholars of Distinction, emphasizes global and intercultural learning which allows students to explore cultures and worldviews other than their own. SPCC is part of the NC Global Distinction Initiative, a program for NC community colleges sponsored by UNC’s World View. The Honors Program offers high achieving students a way to be intellectually challenged beyond the scope of the traditional college course with the Honors project that can be completed in any curriculum course. SPCC has articulation agreements with UNC Greensboro, Appalachian State University, UNC Asheville, Western Carolina University, and Mars Hill University.
