South Piedmont Community College’s Workforce Apprenticeship Partnership has received the 2026 Governor’s NCWorks Award of Distinction for Outstanding Innovative Partnership, recognizing its work to expand apprenticeship opportunities and strengthen career pathways across the region.
Announced by Governor Josh Stein on Oct. 16, the award recognizes the partnership’s collaborative approach to addressing workforce needs, supporting local employers and helping students and jobseekers prepare for high-demand careers. The partnership was recognized during the 39th annual NCWorks Partnership Conference, held Oct.14–15 in Greensboro. Read the full announcement on the North Carolina Department of Commerce website.
Led by South Piedmont, the Workforce Apprenticeship Partnership brings together Union County Economic Development, Union County Public Schools and Wingate University to expand registered apprenticeship opportunities throughout the region.
The partnership works to reduce administrative barriers for employers interested in apprenticeship programs while creating clearer pathways for learners to transition from education into the workforce. These opportunities begin as early as high school through pre-apprenticeship programs and continue into registered apprenticeships that combine hands-on work experience with career-focused training.
The partnership has built a network of more than 30 employers and served more than 60 registered apprentices across industries including manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, food processing and education. Its efforts have helped develop skilled manufacturing technicians while also supporting initiatives to address teacher shortages in local schools.
The recognition underscores the importance of collaboration among education, business, and economic development partners in preparing a skilled workforce and supporting the region’s continued economic growth.
South Piedmont is proud to lead this partnership and work alongside its community partners and regional employers to create meaningful opportunities for students, workers and businesses.
