Two South Piedmont Community College faculty members have been highlighted by UNC-Chapel Hill’s UNC World View for their work incorporating global perspectives into the classroom.

Antowanna Carpenter and Brendan Walsh were awarded grants to develop globalized course modules as part of the Scholar of Global Distinction Program, a collaborative initiative through UNC World View that supports community college instructors in bringing global perspectives into their courses. The program connects educators with UNC librarians and professors who provide resources and guidance throughout the module development process.

During the 2025–2026 academic year, community college instructors across North Carolina developed 11 globalized course modules through the program. These modules span a variety of disciplines and world regions and are designed to strengthen global learning and prepare students to engage in an increasingly interconnected world.

Expanding Global Perspectives Through the Classroom

Walsh was inspired by his extensive international travel and his desire to help students engage more deeply with cultures around the world. His globalized module gives students the opportunity to research and write about current issues affecting a country of their choice while exploring cultures and perspectives that may not traditionally be represented in the curriculum

Carpenter developed a globalized unit for her business management course focused on global business challenges, cultural intelligence and international management. Through real-world applications, the module helps students explore how globalization influences business decisions while developing cultural awareness and a global mindset.

Both faculty members worked with UNC World View resources and experts throughout the development process, incorporating new perspectives and resources into their courses.

Their work demonstrates the ways South Piedmont faculty continue to expand learning opportunities for students and prepare them with skills and perspectives that can benefit them in an increasingly diverse and global workforce.
