The world is becoming increasingly connected, and South Piedmont Community College is helping students prepare to learn, work and thrive in a global environment through its Global Scholars of Distinction Program.
Global Scholars of Distinction is an academic program that provides South Piedmont students with opportunities to develop global competencies, cultural awareness and skills that can support their success at universities focused on global education and in the 21st-century workforce.
Students in any South Piedmont degree program can participate in Global Scholars of Distinction. Through the program, students explore world issues, cultures, and perspectives while developing skills that extend beyond the traditional classroom.
South Piedmont is a member of UNC-Chapel Hill’s World View program for community colleges and the NC Global Distinction Initiative, which supports community colleges in globalizing their curricula and increasing faculty and student involvement in global issues.
The program encourages students to become curious about the world around them, challenge their perspectives, and develop a deeper understanding of different cultures.
“Becoming a Global Scholar has been an unforgettable adventure, and I am overjoyed to present myself as a citizen of the world,” said 2023 South Piedmont graduate Veronica Gallego.
Through Global Scholars of Distinction, students have opportunities to engage with global issues through coursework and activities designed to broaden their perspectives. Students can explore topics that connect their academic interests to the wider world while developing skills in research, communication, cultural understanding, and critical thinking.
The program also provides opportunities for students to participate in travel or domestic experiences that allow them to engage with different cultures and perspectives.
For students who complete the program, the experience provides more than an academic distinction. Global Scholars receive recognition from South Piedmont and UNC-Chapel Hill’s World View program, giving students an opportunity to highlight their global learning and experiences as they continue their education or enter the workforce.
The program reflects South Piedmont’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to look beyond the classroom and develop the skills needed to navigate an increasingly interconnected world.
“With Global Scholars, you’ll become a global detective and uncover some of the world’s most intriguing mysteries, all while honing your research superpowers. Learn to break down cultural barriers and bridge cultures through travel or domestic opportunities,” saidDirector of Academic Enrichment Programs Tammy Frailly.
