Created and directed by Manager of Digital Marketing T.J. Nealy, the film tells the story behind South Piedmont’s beloved mascot, Al the Gator, and the creative journey that brought the mascot to life.
The documentary highlights the vision and artistry of Creative Services Manager Samantha Carvallo, who designed the mascot after months of research, public input, and collaboration across the college. Carvallo studied alligator behavior, symbolism, and anatomy, drawing inspiration from both nature and South Piedmont’s history.
“Telling stories is something I’ve had a passion for since I was 6 years old, drawing comic books on my home computer,” said Nealy. “Having the unique opportunity to tell not only a story about South Piedmont, but a special story for the people of Anson County, is something I’m so honored to have the chance to do. I’m hoping that everyone watching is able to see and hear the passion, dedication, and pride that went into creating the identity of ‘Gator Country.’ I can’t wait for you all to see it.”
The documentary celebrates creativity, collaboration, and community spirit — showcasing how one idea grew from a sketch into a lasting symbol of pride and identity for South Piedmont.
