Arlene Stephens Memorial $500 Continuing Education Full-time or Part-time

Established by SPCC employees to honor the memory of fellow employee, Arlene Stephens, to assist continuing education program students.

Enrolled in a continuing education program leading to a career (e.g., CNA, EMT, advanced manufacturing, auto body).

Barnhardt Family Endowment $1000 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Established through the generosity of the late Caleb and Late Lorene Barnhardt. Mr. Barnhardt, a former tax accountant, and Mrs. Barnhardt, a retired public school teacher, directed their scholarship to benefit Union County students enrolled in accounting, business administration, or elementary education.

BC Moore Foundation Endowment $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Established by the foundation of the family-owned BC Moore & Sons, a chain of department stores once headquartered in Wadesboro.

Anson or adjoining county resident.

Ben & Dot Williams Memorial Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Created through the generosity of John & Julie Hendley and Ben & Carol Williams. The scholarship was established in memory of Mrs. Hendley’s and Mr. Williams’ parents, who were residents and business owners in Union County.

Degree or diploma program. Preference to Union and Anson counties.

Ben & Lillian Gray Rivers Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time

Established through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Allen in memory of her parents, Ben and Lillian Rivers. Mr. Rivers was a long-time sheriff of Anson County and Mrs. Rivers was a business woman and teacher. Preference is given to students who plan to go beyond diploma level (i.e., preference to associate degree students).

Criminal justice, business, early childhood, or other programs leading to a teaching credential. Anson or adjoining county resident. 3.0 GPA.

Created through the generosity of the James R. and Bronnie L. Braswell Trust. The Scholarship awards enthusiastic and personable students who serve as ambassadors for the SPCC Foundation at various fundraising and donor events. Scholarship is reoccurring each semester dependent upon meeting criteria.

30 hours documented Foundation service/semester FT (15 hours for PT). Applicant must submit a faculty letter of recommendation. Minimum 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. each semester. Preference to students who do not qualify for financial aid.

Breanna Rae Ringersen Scholarship $500 Curriculum N/A

The Breanna Rae Ringersen Scholarship was established in memory of Breanna Rae Ringersen by her parents, Craig and Loreen Ringersen. Breanna was a graduate of the BLET program at SPCC. The scholarship will be awarded in the Fall and Spring semesters to 1 student per semester, and may be utilized for fees, books, and required uniform.

Brownette S. McLeod Nursing Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time

Established as a memorial by friends and family members of Mrs. Brownette Sullivan McLeod, a nurse who served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II.

Allied health programs with preference to practical nursing students. Preference to Anson County. 3.0 GPA.

Carol Tyson Women’s Leadership $N/A Curriculum 6+ semester hours

Created by the Union County Women’s Leadership Coalition, the scholarship is awarded to one Union County female student per academic year at 1,250 per semester.

3.0 GPA. Union County Female Resident. Enrolled a minimum of 6 semester hours per semester.

Carpenter Healthcare Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Created by the late SPCC Foundation Director Emeritus Frank Carpenter and his wife Virginia. Award is specified for students in allied health programs.

Preference to Union County students. Preference to A D N students. 2.5+ GPA.

CE Covington Memorial Endowment $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Established through the generosity of SPCC Foundation Board member, Anne Covington Leary, her late husband, Steve Leary, and Sandy Covington Huntley, to honor the memory of Catherine Covington, granddaughter of Mrs. Leary.

Associate degree or diploma program or enrolled at least 20 hours in an occupational continuing education program to begin or enhance a career. Preference to Anson County residents. Overall minimum 3.0 GPA.

Charlotte Pipe & Foundry Endowment $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

An endowed scholarship established through the generosity of Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company and its Dowd Foundation. Students can be enrolled in either curriculum or career-related continuing education programs.

Preference to applicants with a 2.5 or above GPA. Preference given to current employees and children of current employees of Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company.

Criminal Justice Association $300 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Created by Criminal Justice Association service club members at SPCC. One award per academic year to students enrolled in the Criminal Justice Technology degree program.

Anson or Union County resident. Criminal Justice Technology degree program. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must be an active member of the Criminal Justice Association and Criminal Justice Association advisor must verify activity.

Dr. Jerry McGee Endowment $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Established to honor Dr. Jerry McKee, Interim South Piedmont Community College president during 2016. The scholarship awards students enrolled in general education curriculum and continuing education.

General Education, Curriculum & Con Ed. Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. Union & Anson County resident. Financial need.

Dr. John McKay Presidential Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Established to honor Dr. John R. McKay, South Piedmont Community College president from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2011.

Anson or Union. 3.0 GPA. Degree or diploma program.

Freedom Scholarship Endowment $500 Continuing Education N/A N/A

This scholarship is for veterans and active service members pursuing a skilled trades career.

General Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Created through years of external and internal scholarship donations, not specifying a named scholarship, and intended for associate degree program students.

Resident of Union or Anson County. 3.0 GPA. Associate degree program.

Golden LEAF Foundation Scholarship $Varies Either Full-time or Part-time

Created to provide financial assistance to students from economically distressed or tobacco-dependent NC counties.

Eligible students must (1) demonstrate financial need by having completed the most recent FAFSA and (2) reside in a rural county that is tobacco dependent and/or economically distressed which includes Anson, Montgomery, Richmond, Stanly and Randolph counties (a full list of eligible counties can be found here). If you did not complete a FAFSA a copy of the student and parent(s) (if you are dependent) 2016 tax return is required.

Hoyle W. Lee Endowment $500 Curriculum N/A

Established in his memory through the generosity of the Hoyle W. Lee family. Designated to assist allied health students with a preference to practical nursing students, students working in long-term care facilities, or current or previous employees of Heritage Hills Living Center, which Mr. Lee owned and administered until his death in 1974.

Anson or adjoining counties resident. Health technology programs. 2.5 GPA. Preference to practical nursing. Preference if serving in a long-term care facility. Preference to current or previous employees of Heritage Hills Nursing Home or children of employees.

Human Services “Pursing Excellence” $300 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Established by the SPCC Human Services Club, and awarded to a SPCC student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a human services field at a senior institution. Student must intend to transfer to a senior institution to major in a social services field; award will be paid to the senior institution upon recipient’s enrollment in a minimum of 6 credit hours.

Enrolled in Human Services degree program. 3.0 minimum GPA at SPCC. Resident of Anson, Union, or adjoining county.

James A. Hardison, Jr. Memorial Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time

Established to honor Mr. James Hardison, Jr., a civic leader and charter member of the SPCC Board of Trustees.

Preference to Anson County residents. Associate degree in business administration. Enrolled full-time. Minimum 3.0 GPA.

James Bushong Memorial $250 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Established by Beverley Getzen and the late Rufus Getzen of Wadesboro to honor the memory of James Bushong, father of Mrs. Getzen.

Science, math, engineering, or technology programs. Anson County residents. 

Jane & Paul Gettinger Scholarship $1000 Either N/A

Established by Jane & Paul Gettinger.

Enrolled in Associate Degree Nursing, Practical Nursing or CNA programs.

Jane E. Montgomery Memorial Scholarship $250 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Established in honor of Jane E. Montgomery through generous family contributions. The scholarship is intended for students from Anson County enrolled in an Associate Degree program. Renewable up to four semesters.

Anson County resident. Enrolled in an Associate Degree program. Financial need. Minimum 2.5 GPA.

Jim Muldrow Memorial $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Established by SPCC employees to honor the memory of Jim Muldrow, SPCC’s Marketing and Communications Coordinator, who passed away in 2013.

Resident Union or Anson county. Preference to students enrolled in college transfer or seeking a degree in nursing or an allied health program.

Kenneth Collins Memorial $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Created to honor the memory of former SPCC Trustee, Kenneth Collins.

Enrolled in curriculum & continuing education. Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Kiwanis Club of Monroe $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Established through the generosity of the Kiwanis Club of Monroe.

Union County resident – preference to Monroe area. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Record of community service.

Las Amigas $300 Curriculum Full-time

Established through the generosity of the Morven Chapter of Las Amigas.

Anson County resident – preference Morven area. Full-time associate degree or diploma program. Minimum 2.0 GPA.

LAWA (Latin Americans Working for Achievement) Scholarship $1000 Curriculum Full-time

This program consists of a series of workshops for high school students and their parents to provide guidance and informational resources to encourage Latino and other minority teenagers to successfully complete high school and pursue a higher education.

LAWA designates one yearly scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to be assigned to a full-time student attending SPCC for two consecutive years, as long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.

Margie & J.B. Watson Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Created to honor Mrs. Watson’s memory and J.B. Watson, a former trustee, by the partners of J.B. Watson & Company. Mr. Watson, a certified public accountant, was the founder of J.B. Watson & Co. of Wadesboro.

Minimum 2.5 GPA. Preference to Anson County residents.

Maureen DeVitto Memorial Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Created to honor the memory of Maureen DeVitto, a former nurse and wife of the late John DeVitto, SPCC’s former Senior Vice President of Finance and Administrative Services.

Preference to students of Anson and Union counties. Preference first to students enrolled in the associate degree nursing or practical nursing programs; then, to students enrolled in other Allied Health programs. Preference 3.0 or above grade point average.

Pilot Club of Monroe $1,000 Curriculum 6+ semester hours

Established by the Pilot Club of Monroe, an international service organization, with the mission of helping people afflicted with brain disorders. Scholarship is award for Fall and renewable for spring, if possible.

2.5 minimum GPA to receive and maintain scholarship. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours. Limited to students in special education concentration of Early Childhood Education program.

Pilot Club of Monroe Criminal Justice $500 Curriculum 6+ semester hours

Established by the Pilot Club of Monroe, an international service organization, with the mission of helping people afflicted with brain disorders and awarded to students in the Criminal Justice degree program.

2.5 minimum GPA. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours. Limited to students in the Criminal Justice Degree program. Financial Need.

Robert & Jewell Lee Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Established through the generosity of late Mr. Robert Lee and his wife, Jewell Lee of Albemarle. Mr. Lee, an Anson County native, was a retired certified public accountant and farmer in Anson County. Mrs. Lee is a former adjunct instructor at SPCC.

Anson County residents. Curriculum program. 2.5+ GPA.

Robert & Jewell Lee Healthcare Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Established by Beverley Getzen of Wadesboro to honor the memory of her husband, Rufus Thomas Getzen. Awards funds for tuition, fees, textbooks and required course supplies to Curriculum or Continuing Education SPCC students.

Anson or adjoining counties. Full-time or part-time students.

SPCC Foundation General $500 Curriculum 6+ semester hours

A general scholarship created by the SPCC Foundation and funded by employees of SPCC.

Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA.

State Employees Credit Union Bridge to Career Scholarship (Set up link to application on website) $500 Continuing Education Short-term training program (96-hour or more)

SECU Foundation has established the SECU Bridge to Career Program to help remove financial barriers for students seeking to obtain state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials through the Workforce Continuing Education Division of their local Community College that lead to sustainable wage careers within their local communities. Only be awarded one (1) CE SECU Foundation scholarship within a funding year and students must complete enrolled course within the program year. Preference given to students with limited or no access to financial aid from other programs.

Be a U.S. citizen and a North Carolina resident.

State Employees Credit Union Scholarship $2,500 Curriculum Full-time

Established by the State Employees Credit Union Foundation of North Carolina. Scholarship exemplifies community service, “people helping people,” with an annual award of 2,500 per year for two years.

North Carolina Resident. Demonstrated Financial Need through FAFSA. Degree, diploma, or certificate program. Minimum 2.5 GPA.

State Utility Contractors Endowment $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

An endowed scholarship established through the generosity of the Monroe-based State Utility Contractors, Inc. Intended for deserving students from Union or adjoining counties.

Susan M. Horne Endowment $500 Curriculum N/A

Established by and funded through the generosity of Kenneth W. Horne Jr. and Chuck Horne in memory of their sister.

Resident of Anson or adjoining counties. Full-time in an Allied Health program. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference to practical nursing or surgical tech students and those planning to continue their education beyond the diploma level.

Tom Crooke Opportunity Fund $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Established to honor SPCC Trustee Chairman, Tom Crooke, who passed away in August 2014.

Curriculum & continuing education students. Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Trustee & Foundation Leadership Endowment $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Created and funded through the generosity of members of the SPCC Board of Trustees and the SPCC Foundation Board of Directors.

Anson or Union county residents. 3.0 GPA, if curriculum student. Preference to SPCC GED graduates. Continuing education applicants must be recommended by instructor.

Ty-Par Commercial Realty Endowment $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Established by Carlton Tyson and his wife, Carol to assist Union County students enrolled in vocational programs.

Union County Resident. Full or Part-time enrollment. 2.5 GPA Financial Need.

W. Cliff Martin Endowment $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Created in honor of W. Cliff Martin, a charter member of the Board of Trustees of SPCC. Mr. Martin, a successful businessman and long-time mayor of Polkton, donated the land for the Polkton campus. The Martin Technology Building and the Martin Student Center are named in his honor. Preference is given to students from Polkton.

Anson County resident. Preference to Polkton residents. 3.0 GPA.

Wade Mfg. Endowment $500 Either Full-time or Part-time

Established through the generosity of Wade Manufacturing Company, a long-time textile firm operating in Wadesboro.

Preference to Wade Mfg. employees, their spouses or children. Preference to Anson residents, then counties adjoining Anson.

Wadesboro Civitan Club $500 Curriculum Full-time or Part-time

Established through the generosity of the Wadesboro Civitan Club.

Awarded to students admitted to an allied health program. Preference to Anson County residents.

WD Covington Memorial Endowment $500 Curriculum Full-time

Established through the generosity of Mrs. Anne Covington Leary, a former college trustee, to honor the memory of the late Dunnie Covington, a Wadesboro businessman who was instrumental in the creation of the Anson County Chamber of Commerce.

Associate degree in business technology program. Second-year student. Anson or adjoining counties resident. 3.0 GPA.
