Auto Body & Collision Repair

SPCC’s continuing education offerings in auto body and collision repair prepare students to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, reconstruct and finish automobile bodies, fenders, and external features. Courses are taught at the Whitaker Center for Applied Technology on the L.L. Polk Campus and include instruction in structure analysis, damage repair, non-structural analysis, mechanical and electrical components, plastics and adhesives, painting and refinishing techniques, and damage analysis and estimating. Courses are aligned with I-CAR, NATEF, and ASE collision repairs credentials, preparing students to register and sit for specific industry certifications of their choice. Students may learn skills to launch a new career or advance an existing one; or take classes for personal growth, just for fun, or simply to satisfy a curiosity.

Corporate Learning Options for Business and Industry

SPCC’s auto body and collision repair classes are also available to meet the unique workforce training needs of local businesses. Companies have the option of sending employees to publicly scheduled course section offerings, or working with SPCC representatives to determine the feasibility of scheduling dedicated course sections for employee co-horts.

Companies also have the option of sponsoring students through the apprenticeship program, providing an opportunity to grow talent while helping students to complete a programs of study and earn industry-recognized credentials. To learn more, please visit the SPCC apprenticeship website.

The learning objectives for each course below are aligned with I-CAR’s ProLevel 1® requirements for the I-CAR Platinum designation, preparing students for entry-level positions as Non-Structural and Refinish Technician


Introduction to Auto Body Repair and Restoration

Course Description

AUT 3109AM, 128 hours

This course is designed to prepare the student for entry level positions in the Auto Body Repair Field. Students will be taught how to identify and describe the current types of body/frame construction; identify and describe the individual components of both conventional and unitized construction; evaluate vehicle damage through proper application of measuring and gauging equipment and sequencing techniques; identify and differentiate between the types of equipment available for making effective frame and underbody repairs; and return vehicle to pre-accident condition. Upon completion, students will have the knowledge base to perform hands-on repairs in the areas of non-structural and structural repairs, MIG welding, plastics and adhesives, refinishing, and other related areas. This course is aligned with the Collision Repair & Refinish Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, as well as I-CAR’s ProLevel 1® requirements for the I-CAR Platinum designation.

Auto Body Painting and Surface Preparation

Course Description

AUT 3109AN, 128 hours

This course introduces the proper procedures for using automotive refinishing equipment and materials in surface preparation and application. Topics include federal, state, and local regulations, personal safety, refinishing equipment and materials, surface preparation, masking, application techniques, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and use proper equipment and materials in refinishing following accepted industry standards. This course is aligned with the Collision Repair & Refinish Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, as well as I-CAR’s ProLevel 1® requirements for the I-CAR Platinum designation.

This course introduces safety, tools, and the basic fundamentals of body repair. Topics include shop safety, damage analysis, tools and equipment, repair techniques, materials selection, materials usage, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and repair minor direct and indirect damage including removal/repairing/replacing of body panels to accepted standards. Basic Welding for Transportation

Course Description

This course covers the terms and procedures for welding various metals used in the transportation industry with an emphasis on personal safety and environmental health. Topics include safety and precautionary measures, setup/operation of MIG equipment, metal identification methods, types of welds/joints, techniques, inspection methods, cutting processes and other related issues. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of welding operations and safety procedures according to industry standards. Damage Estimation

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive study of autobody estimating. Topics include collision damage analysis, industry regulations, flat-rate and estimated time, and collision estimating manuals. Upon completion, students should be able to prepare and interpret a damage report.
