Motorcycle Rider Safety Training

Motorcycle classes are now back in session.

Course Description

Basic Rider Course designed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and provides 18 hours of practical riding skills for new riders, or for experienced riders who want to improve their riding skills.

*Must have at least 3 students to run the course

  • Motorcycles provided
  • Small class size
  • High quality, experienced instructors
  • Driver’s License required
  • Motorcycle permit or endorsement is not required
  • Must have the ability to ride a two-wheel bicycle

Successful graduates of this course will receive a waiver card for the on-bike skills portion (road test) of the NC DMV motorcycle license test. This course meets the guidelines of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the N.C. Motorcycle Safety Education Program.

Under 18? State law requires that anyone under 18 who applies to obtain a motorcycle learner’s permit or a driver license with a motorcycle endorsement must pass a course taught by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or the N.C. Motorcycle Safety Education Program. Students must be at least 16 to take the Motorcycle: Basic Rider course and a driver’s license or permit is required. This is a safety course that provides a DMV waiver card; the course does not provide, or guarantee, a license; adding a motorcycle license endorsement to a North Carolina Driver’s License is regulated by the DMV; check  the DMV website or handbook for current guidelines.

The law in North Carolina requires the operator of any motorcycle to have a motorcycle endorsement shown on their driver license or possess a motorcycle learner permit. A motorcycle learner’s permit will be issued for only 12 months, and only one renewal of six months will be allowed.

All students are required to take the MSF e-course on their own and bring their certificate of completion to class.

Please email kgriffin@spcc.edu your email address after you register so your coupon code can be emailed to you (one week before the class begins) for the online portion of the class. (Required before you can take the riding portion)

If you will need access to a computer prior to the class, please contact us in order for us to assist you. If you have NOT received the email with instructions and your coupon code by the Monday before the class, please email us at kgriffin@spcc.edu or call 704-290-5223 to receive the information.

Students need to bring a pen and dress appropriately for riding, including:

  • long pants
  • long sleeves
  • over the ankle footwear
  • Due to COVID-19 students must bring their own helmet and gloves. The helmet must be DOT-compliant (FMVSS No. 218) and in good condition
  • A face mask will be required in the classroom (we have them available for students)
